The Saronic Islands or Argo-Saronic Islands is an archipelago in Greece, named after the Saronic Gulf in which they are located, just off the Greek mainland. The main inhabited islands of this group are Salamis, Aegina, Agistri, and Poros. The islands of Hydra and Spetses, which lie off the northeast tip of the Peloponnese (technically in the Argolic Gulf), are also included.

Aim of the expedition

An 8 day expedition from Epidaurus, on the north coast of the Argolis Peninsula, to Nafplio.  The trip will follow the coast but also visit the islands of of Poros, Hydra, Dokos and Spetsus.   The total distance is around 175 km.

Expedition plan

The advertised dates allow 7 full days kayaking and 7 nights camping out .  After your arrival in Athens airport on April 2, you will take a shared transfer directly to Epidaurus on the Peloponnese.  Here you will stay on a sea side hotel.

April 3.  Starting directly from the hotel we will begin our expedition.

April 3-10:  8 day sea kayaking expedition for Epidavros to Nafplio (see map)

April 10: Arrive in Nafplio and stay in a hotel for the night April 11:  Shared transfer to Athens Airport (3 hours)

Arrival and departure

You must arrive in Athens on April 2, anytime before 12pm.  I will book the transfer when I have all flight details.

Depart from Athens on (or after) April 11, anytime after 2pm.

Required Paddling Experience

This expedition is for strong and competent paddlers who would like to enjoy the experience of an extended sea trip, including open crossings of 8km.  Experience of specialist sea kayaks is essential.  To join us you should be:

  • Fit enough to paddle up to 30km per day

  • Have some experience of rough water

  • Able to control the boat down wind and across the wind

  • Able to paddle into strong wind

  • Have experience and equipment for camping in the wind and rain.

Camping will be wild, on or near beaches.  Some are remote and there will be no facilities.  Some are near to the towns, allowing us to go shopping or for a restaurant meal.  A strong lightweight, waterproof tent is essential.

The expedition is self catering:-   Usually, we each look after our own breakfast, lunch and snacks and prepare a group evening meal, in turn.  There are supermarkets on all the islands, near the ferry ports so we will shop as we go to keep the boats light.  An occasional restaurant meal is also an option. You are welcome to bring food items from home if you wish.

Stoves and fuel

I will provide Trangia camping stoves for the group - one per 4 persons.  The stove includes 2x2l pots, a kettle and a 22cm frying pan.  I will also provide gas.

Temperature will be in the range 15-20 degrees.  Water will be around 16 degrees.  There is a small possibility of rain.

What to wear

For paddling,  A cagoule (waterproof paddling jacket) and neoprene trousers or similar will be required on windy or rainy days. Shorts and a shirt will be sufficient on most days.
